Settling In: Lauren Sylvia Begins Her Residency at OAC

March 18, 2025

We’re excited to share that our 2025 Emerging Artist in Residence, Lauren Sylvia, has officially begun her time at the Orange Art Center!

Lauren arrived last week to settle into her dedicated studio space. She was welcomed by OAC Coordinator Destyni Green, who gave her a personal tour of the building and introduced her to the space where she’ll be developing her newest body of work over the next month.

As part of her orientation, Lauren and Destyni spent time discussing ideas for the residency and shopping for a fresh set of art supplies to support her creative process. These first steps have already sparked exciting possibilities, and Lauren is eager to dive in and explore new directions in her work.

There’s nothing quite like a fresh set of supplies and a beautiful space to spark creativity, and we can’t wait to see what unfolds in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes looks at Lauren’s progress as she brings her newest body of work to life here at OAC.

OAC WELCOMES EMERGING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, LAUREN SYLVIA

The Orange Art Center (OAC) is thrilled to welcome our inaugural Emerging Artist in Residence, Lauren Sylvia! From March 11 to April 4, Lauren will be working in our studios to develop a new body of work. We can’t wait to share her creative journey with you—stay tuned for weekly updates and exclusive insights into her artistic process.

Meet the Artist: Lauren Sylvia

Lauren Sylvia’s work is deeply inspired by the connection between people and nature. A mixed media artist, Lauren explores themes of love, loss, and transformation, often weaving personal narratives into her pieces. Her practice is a space for reflection, vulnerability, and preservation, inviting viewers to find fragments of their own stories within her work.

“I am overjoyed to be able to create a body of work so close to my heart at OAC! I look forward to sharing a part of my world with the wonderful community!” – Lauren Sylvia

Join us in welcoming Lauren to OAC and follow along as she brings her artistic vision to life!

About the Emerging Artist Residency

The OAC Emerging Artist Residency supports early-career visual artists in Northeast Ohio by providing dedicated time, space, and resources to explore and expand their work. Residents gain access to our studios, professional mentorship, and the opportunity to present a solo exhibition, along with a stipend and material budget to support their creative process.

To further engage our community, OAC will host onsite programming throughout the residency, offering students and visitors unique opportunities to connect with Lauren, learn about her process, and participate in hands-on creative experiences.

This program fosters new artistic voices and strengthens the local creative landscape by encouraging collaboration and innovation. OAC remains committed to nurturing talent and providing meaningful opportunities for artists to flourish and engage with the community.

Future Residency Opportunities

We are excited to continue this program and support more artists in their creative endeavors. Applications for the next Emerging Artist Residency will open in Fall/Winter 2025, and we encourage artists from all backgrounds to apply.

We look forward to sharing this incredible journey with Lauren and our community. Stay tuned for exclusive insights into her process, and mark your calendars for her upcoming solo exhibition at OAC!

OAC Announces: the OAC Scholarship Fund!

Celebrating the Launch of the OAC Scholarship Fund

The Orange Art Center is proud to announce the launch of the OAC Scholarship Fund, debuting on February 10, 2025, and made possible by a generous donation from OAC community member and participant Steve Garfunkel. Inspired by the dedication and artistic teaching of OAC painting instructors Annie Peters and Marlene Weinstein, Garfunkel's contribution helps establish a scholarship to provide financial assistance to individuals pursuing art education. Rooted in the belief that art brings healing and joy, the OAC Scholarship seeks to empower all individuals to explore their creativity and share the transformative power of art with the community.

The Power of Art and Education

Art has the ability to heal, inspire, and connect communities. The OAC Scholarship ensures financial barriers do not prevent aspiring artists from accessing quality education. Whether you are new to art or looking to refine your skills, this scholarship offers a meaningful opportunity for artistic growth.

Annie Peters, one of the dedicated OAC instructors who inspired this initiative, often reminds her students that "Creativity takes courage." She encourages adult learners to embrace their unique artistic voices, believing that "As an adult student, you have a lifetime of experience to bring to your work. Celebrate your unique visual voice." Her philosophy underscores the importance of patience, practice, and perseverance in the creative journey.

Marlene Weinstein, another beloved instructor at OAC, expresses deep gratitude for this scholarship: "I am incredibly thankful to Steve Garfunkel for establishing this scholarship in honor of his instructors. His generosity is both meaningful and inspiring. This gift will open the door for more community members to experience the joy of art classes. It is truly wonderful because art enriches and uplifts our lives." She also reflects on the power of art with a favorite quote: "Art is less important than life, but what a poor life without it." – Robert Motherwell.

OAC's First- Ever Residency Program is Here!

The Orange Art Center (OAC) is launching its first-ever residency program with the OAC Emerging Artist Residency starting this Spring! This program aims to support the artistic and professional development of early-career visual artists in NE Ohio. The 4-week residency period is designed for the emerging artist to develop and/or begin a body of work not yet shown in a gallery setting. With access to our studios, professional development resources, and mentorship resources, each emerging artist resident will have the support and dedicated space they need to lead to their very own solo exhibition to be shared here at the Orange Art Center.

In addition, this program offers the community the opportunity to engage with a local professional artist early in their career! The community will be able to visit the artist for studio visits, attend artist-led workshops and/or artist talks during the residency period, and see a professional artist working in real time!

Benefits of the residency include:

  • Access to the Orange Art Center’s Painting and Ceramics Studio including equipment during operating hours.

  • Temporary storage for artwork and supplies

  • A solo exhibition in the Orange Art Center's unique gallery space

  • An artist talk event and/or workshop led by the resident
